Does my Toronto meter base need replacing with a panel upgrade?

Not always — but it depends on the condition and rating of your existing meter base, and a panel upgrade is often the right time to address both together.

The meter base (also called the meter socket) is the weatherproof enclosure mounted on the exterior of your home where Toronto Hydro connects their service to your electrical system. When you upgrade your panel, your electrician will assess whether the existing meter base is rated to handle the new service capacity, is in good physical condition, and meets current Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements. If you're upgrading from a 100A to a 200A service, and your meter base is only rated for 100A, it absolutely must be replaced — you cannot push 200A through a 100A-rated socket.

Your electrician coordinates this disconnect/reconnect through Toronto Hydro's contractor portal. Plan for a one-day power outage during this work. Toronto Hydro typically requires 5-10 business days' notice for scheduled disconnects, though this varies by season — summer and post-ice-storm periods see longer wait times as crews are stretched.

A meter base replacement adds $200-$400 in equipment cost to your panel upgrade. The labour is largely absorbed into the overall job since the electrician is already working in that area. A complete service upgrade — new 200A panel, new meter base, new service entrance cable, and Toronto Hydro coordination — runs $3,500-$5,000 in the current GTA market. If your service entrance cable and meter base are already rated for 200A and in good condition, a panel-only swap can come in at $2,000-$3,000.

Your electrician will assess the meter base as part of any panel upgrade quote — ask them specifically about its condition and rating during the estimate. If they're not mentioning it, ask directly: "Is the meter base rated for 200A and in good enough condition to leave?" A thorough electrician will have a clear answer.
